I adopted Tater from Oakland Animal Services about a year ago and although is the light of my life, it is clear that she would do much better in a more rural environment that would help calm her anxiety.
About Tater:
-1 year, 10 months old, spayed female, all up to date on vaccinations
– Very loving with her family, good with kids in the home, could do well with another confident dog in the home. She has a healthy respect for cats and is very curious about them.
– Has anxiety around people and new places, would need an owner who is willing to be patient and work hard on her training
What she loves and what she is good at:
– She loves most dogs, I think she would do well with a calm confident dog in the house who could help her build some confidence.
– Her people. Once you’re in, you’re in. She is a very wiggly worm when her humans get home (this includes my dad even though she is often more suspicious of men, she loves him now). She is great with kids in the home and would very lovingly give them a nose boop.
– Tug
– The couch is her favorite place
– The beach, she loves to frolic and do zoomies in the sand.
-She knows sit, down, stay and wait. She is incredibly well mannered in the house, never chews stuff that she shouldnt, doesnt get up on counters.
-Nature. For a short time, we had a backyard and it was her favorite place. She is at her happiest when in nature, and I can tell because that is when she is the most curious.
Her fears and what she needs to work on:
– Strangers both in and out of the home. For people entering the house, there is a very specific routine to make sure she is comfortable that we let people know ahead of time (dont put too much social pressure on her, scatter treats without looking at her and just come in and ignore her until she seems calm and approaches you). The second time meeting a houseguest, she usually loves them.
-Out in the world is where her anxiety can come out and she will need an owner who is experienced in both being able to avoid triggers and slowly working on building up her confidence. She always walks much more curiously and confidently with multiple people in a pack or multiple dogs.
– Here are a few of her triggers: Runners, people that come around a corner quickly in an instance that is unpredictable, people in hats or who walk with a cane (they look out of the ordinary to her).
