The Humane Society of Sonoma County (HSSC) seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic  and energetic individual to support our behavior and training team.

This part time Academy of Dog (AOD) Administrative Support position will work from the HSSC animal shelter and will play a vital role in supporting the class instructors and HSSC class students.

This position also interfaces with the public on a regular basis requiring excellent customer service.

SOME OF THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE:

  • Respond to voicemail and email daily within 24 hours at the latest.
  • Help students navigate Event Espresso by phone, email and/or text.
  • Plan the Academy of Dog (AOD) training schedule for the year with the Canine Behavior and Training Manager (BnT).
  • Communicate with the AOD instructors about their availability.
  • Send calendar invitations to AOD instructors to confirm their class schedules.
  • Make room reservations for classes.
  • Schedule and post classes through Event Espresso.
  • Monitor Event Espresso throughout the week to gauge enrollments.
  • Manage the waitlist and communicate with students.
  • Communicate potential low enrollment cancellation/reschedules with Canine Behavior and Training Manager
  • Collect waivers and vaccine records before the client arrives at the first class. Follow-up via email then text, then phone call for those not submitted.
  • Communicate with instructors that vaccines have been confirmed for their students.
  • Send dog training rosters to the Canine Behavior and Training Manager, BnT volunteer admin, instructors and both adoption staff no later than noon the day before the class start date.
  • Help create graduation certificates for graduating students.
  • Send class surveys and collect data.
  • Track data from class attendance.
  • Assist instructors with canceling a class for an emergency.
  • Notify the BnT manager and the adoption staff by email or text message ASAP.
  • Confirm that all students have been notified via email, text and phone as soon as there is communication of a class being canceled.
  • Make sure that a sign is hung on the door of the training room.

Client and Patient Care Representative for Community Veterinary Clinic

The Humane Society of Sonoma County is looking for an Animal Care/Adoption Coordinator for our Healdsburg campus.

In this very versatile position, the Animal Care Adoption Coordinator will help ensure the proper care and treatment for animals when they arrive in our Healdsburg shelter, monitoring and caring for animals during their stay, expediting foster placements as needed.  This position is also responsible for facilitating happy adoptions!

Responsibilities include, but not limited to, ensuring quality customer service, delivering treatments, vaccines, microchips to animals, cleaning and feeding the shelter animals and monitoring their wellbeing.

This position also performs canine behavior observations, creates enrichment pathways, and leads dog skills classes for volunteers.

In addition, this position performs feline behavior assessments and adoption recommendations.

The successful candidate should have an understanding of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology and sufficient mathematical skills to ensure the administration of accurate drug and fluid dose.

The Animal Care/Adoption Coordinator will be a foster team member with exemplary customer service skills and the ability to match the individual needs of animals in the adoption program with well-suited homes.

Adoption Counselors facilitate appropriate adoptions by understanding the needs of animals in the adoption program and matching them with prospective adopters; this includes preparing animals for adoption, interacting with customers, screening potential adopters, explaining organization philosophies, policies and procedures, providing general information and preparing necessary paperwork.

Additionally this position will process animal surrenders, intake stray animals and transfers, assist with lost pets, process occasional cremation requests, promote training class registrations and gratefully accept donations

SUMMARY

The Foster Care Coordinator is responsible for managing the flow, placement and return of foster animals as well as recruiting, nurturing, and educating the volunteer foster caregivers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures the safety and care for animals while at the shelter.
  • Coordinate the transfer of animals to the appropriate foster home matching skill level and availability.
  • Schedule pick up and drop off appointments.
  • Schedule medical and tech appointments.
  • Schedule spay/neuter return appointments.
  • Provide basic medical care and behavioral enrichment for the shelter animals.
  • Work with foster team members and other HSSC departments to keep the program running smoothly.
  • Train volunteers on policies and procedures in addition to animal skills.
  • Ensure volunteers are compliant and provide continued support and communication.
  • Document job procedures so department runs consistently all week.
  • Maintain appropriate volunteer records and database.
  • Maintain and enhance volunteer communications and updates through email, telephone, in person and through written correspondence.
  • Respond to foster parents in a timely fashion.
  • Acquire appropriate volunteer paperwork and waivers.
  • Work with volunteers to ensure proper protocols are followed.
  • May include administering of vaccines, dewormings, and other basic medications.
  • Work with the foster team helping to identify and address medical and behavioral concerns.
  • Organize supplies for foster volunteer pick up.
  • May transport animals in a Humane Society vehicle and travel to other animal welfare agencies.
  • Be available to work at both Santa Rosa and Healdsburg location.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Common animal husbandry, safe capture, restraint, transfer, and confinement of a variety of animals.
  • Ability to maintain composure in difficult and stressful situations.
  • Experience working with companion animals.
  • Knowledge of cat and dog health and behavior issues, particularly those common in a shelter environment.
  • Knowledge of basic animal healthcare; RVT, Veterinary Tech or other veterinary medical skills and knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and effectively.
  • Effective record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills, including coordination of volunteer and staff activities.
  • Must be articulate, organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to be patient and tactful when interacting with challenging, sensitive or emotional people and issues.  Strong written and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Shelter Buddy a plus.

  • Complete classes scheduled by the Behavior & Training Department and Shelter Medicine.

The Humane Society of Sonoma County – HSSC is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic bi-lingual ADOPTION COUNSELOR to join our team.
This position is responsible for handling all functions at the HSSC Animal Shelter front desk including both on-site and off-site adoptions, ensuring quality customer service for all our external and internal customers.

Adoption Counselors facilitate appropriate adoptions by understanding the needs of animals in the HSSC adoption program and matching them with prospective adopters.
Tasks includes:

  • preparing animals for adoption,
  • interacting with customers,

In addition to adoptions, a large portion of the Adoption Counselor’s time is spent handling other front desk duties, such as:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure a culture of high quality customer service for both internal and external customers.
  • Participate in animal surrender and adoption process, as well as stray intake from the public.
  • Partner with and supervise volunteers assisting in the department.
  • Provide information to the public on all services and programs of the Humane Society, articulating the organization’s policies and philosophies in a positive manner.
  • Remain educated and up-to-date on the animals available for adoption.

  • Understand animal behavior and common issues in order to make good adoption matches.
  • Monitor the health of adoptable animals reporting any medical or behavioral problems to the Adoptions Manager or Medical team.

  • Photograph adoptions keeping record of positive adoption stories.

  • Assist individuals with lost and found pets, creating and checking reports frequently.
  • Process animal cremation requests (may require handling of deceased animals).

  • Communicate and partner with other community agencies.

Supervision: This position reports directly to the Adoption Program Manager with secondary reporting to the Shelter Initiatives Director.
This position may supervise volunteers as needed.

The Animal Care Manager will ensure that all animals in our shelter are provided the best possible care and attention while housed with HSSC.

This position is directly responsible, in conjunction with the Director of Operations, Animal Care (DOO), for hiring, scheduling, training and overseeing a team of Animal Care Technician (ACT) staff and Animal Care Assistant (ACA) volunteers to ensure that high standards for animal care are upheld.

The responsibilities of the HSSC Animal Care Team will include all aspects of animal husbandry, handling, housing, cleaning, feeding, medicating, enrichment, dog walking and record keeping for all animals on-site.

The Animal Care Manager, under the supervision of the DOO, will work with other departments such as Shelter Medicine, Adoptions Admissions and our Canine and Feline Behavior teams to ensure appropriate training targets and refreshers are met for the ACT staff and safe working conditions are maintained.

This position is also responsible for ordering, tracking and stocking animal care supplies and food for all the shelter animals and will perform all necessary tasks and functions to ensure the shelter is maintained in a thoroughly clean and sanitary manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hiring and onboarding ACT staff including writing annual performance review, and implementing counseling and/or corrective action when necessary to improve job performance.
  • Maintain ACT staff schedule, making changes where needed to cover vacations, sick days, and emergencies.
  • Approve and audit weekly payroll, including time off and change requests using the Web time system.
  • Provide oversight for all aspects of animal care performed by ACT staff and ACA volunteers including but not limited to: feeding, medicating, housing, cleaning, enrichment, dog walking, record keeping and reporting.
  • Track inventory of animals on-site and monitor the daily health, safety, behavior and appearance of all shelter animals reporting or acting upon anything that might require additional training or medical services.
  • Offer and implement training and the provision of on-going, annual refreshers for ACT staff and volunteers in collaboration with other departments. Develop staff skills through experience to improve operations overall.
  • Keep ACT staff informed and educated on HSSC safety practices and policies.
  • Act as a liaison between ACT staff and volunteers and other HSSC departments, namely, Shelter Medicine, Adoptions, Behavior teams and Upper Management, to ensure that needs of animals on-site and the ACT team are collectively being met.
  • Participate in volunteer orientations for the recruitment of new ACA volunteers, initial and ongoing training and support of volunteers, and scheduling of volunteer activity in conjunction with the Volunteer Program Coordinator.
  • Onboard and oversee community service volunteers in conjunction with the Volunteer Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain, develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) as they pertain to animal care, updating on a regular basis and as needed.
  • Manage ACT folders and files to ensure that all animal care relevant information is kept orderly and easily accessible to all.
  • Actively step in to perform all areas of ACT staff responsibility to help with the daily flow or to cover unexpected staff shortages, as needed.
  • Order, track and stock all animal care related supplies and food, including prescription diets, maintaining a good working relationship with appropriate vendors while adhering to department expense budget.
  • Ensure that all relevant facilities are in good working order (hoses, cage banks, door handles, etc.) including all necessary cleaning supplies (mop handles, buckets, squeegees, brooms, foamers, etc) in collaboration with the Facilities department.
  • Participate in weekly rounds with heads of appropriate departments, bi-weekly operations team meetings, and monthly upper management meeting.
  • Provide specialized animal care as needed or directed.
  • May occasionally assist in the handling of a deceased animal if brought to the shelter.
  • Maintain a pleasant, professional, courteous and tactful position with co-workers and the public at all times.
  • Assist the general public as requested, responding to inquiries of a general nature by telephone and in person.
  • Assist the general public in the admittance of their pet or stray animals through proper interviewing techniques and completion of all necessary paperwork.
  • Perform minor medical tasks such as gross physical examination, sub-Q vaccinations, microchip implantation, and oral general de-wormer at time of admittance, if needed.
  • Accurately and completely enter admission and animal information, incident reports, bite reports, animal care requests and medication reporting, tracking and completion, utilizing the Shelter Buddy (SB) software. Additionally, train and oversee ACT staff in SB use.
  • Actively support and promote the mission and goals of HSSC ensuring a positive image, enhancing the operation of the organization, and improving the quality of life for animals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision:  

This position reports directly to the DOO and supervises the Animal Care Technician staff and Animal Care Assistant volunteers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  

  • The ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong leadership skills, the ability to lead and motivate a team of individuals towards a common goal.
  • Must demonstrate self-motivation, responsibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast- paced environment.
  • Knowledge of domestic animal breeds, diseases, health care and basic animal behavior.
  • Ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical or other problems, as well as aggressive behavior.
  • Ability to properly lift animals, food, and supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 2 years animal care experience preferred.
  • One-year managing staff or volunteers.
  • Experience in humane animal handling, restraint and confinement.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word.
  • Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays.

The Humane Society of Sonoma County is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Canine Behavior Specialist to join our team.

This position plays a vital role in caring for animals alongside our amazing medical staff and animal care providers.

This position is also responsible for:

  • writing canine adoption recommendations,
  • providing enrichment opportunities,
  • assisting in adoption behavior consults and follow-up,
  • execution of behavior modification plans and
  • training and supervising Canine Care volunteers.

The Specialist will have a proven ability to think critically while gathering information, which will result in a creative and objective canine behavior analysis.

The Specialist will also work closely with volunteers, HSSC shelter staff and members of the public.

Superlative customer service skills with both internal and external customers are required.

Must also have excellent skills in force-free, science/reward-based dog and canine behavior modification training.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in an animal shelter environment with direct animal contact.
  • KPA-CTP, equivalent certification, or comparable experience working with and training dogs in a professional capacity is a requirement.
  • Fear Free certification a plus.
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • Bachelor’s or associate degree preferred.
  • Must hold a valid CA driver’s license, have dependable transportation, and be able to provide proof of insurability.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and evenings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of canine health and behavior issues, particularly those common in a shelter environment.
  • Keen understanding of canine body language.
  • Ability to develop and carry out behavior modification and training plans while following LIMA and LIFE protocols.
  • Shows a history of staying current with the latest science-based methods of working with canines.
  • Proven ability to communicate professionally and creatively through writing and speaking.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook/Excel/Share Point is required.
  • Experience with Shelter Buddy a plus.
  • Experience with YouTube and other social media a plus.
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities while working in a changing environment.
  • Must work well with volunteers and staff by applying patience and understanding in all situations.
  • Must have the ability to remain calm and tactful while interacting with internal and external customers regarding canine behavior.
  • Ability to remain calm during intense and emotional situations with humans and canines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze dog observations and write adoption recommendations.
  • Write and execute Behavior Modification and/or training plans for canines.
  • Analyze enrichment needs of canines and create an action plan.
  • Supervise Play Groups, Out and Abouts, K9X and all shelter dog classes.
  • Monitor and update the dog walking board throughout the day.
  • Support the Animal Care Technicians and CCV volunteers in walking dogs.
  • Write SOAPs, foster and alternative placement requests.
  • Review, update and copy the dog walking notes into Shelter Buddy.
  • Review and copy any reported dog observations into Shelter Buddy.
  • Communicate to other staff about incident reports and bite quarantines.
  • Communicate to volunteers about medical or behavioral updates.
  • Provide behavior consultations and assist with dog introductions for adoptions.
  • Provide follow-up post-adoption consultations for behavior dogs within 24 hours.
  • Video/photograph/create content of canines for HSSC’s social media as needed.
  • Assist Shelter Medicine with behavior dog exams and handling advice.
  • Fit dogs with equipment, collars and leashes appropriate to their needs.
  • Clean up urine and feces as seen in habitats and yards.
  • Clean and monitor all play yards, restock toys and equipment.
  • Clean, restock and organize the Behavior and Training Office, the Volunteer Lounge, the Multi-Purpose room and the Training Room.
  • Provide support and encouragement to CCV volunteers by restocking treats, helping with computer issues, coaching and communicating appreciation at every opportunity.
  • Train and coach CCV volunteers as directed by supervisor.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.

Other Essential Duties:

  • Attend Shelter Committee meetings as assigned by supervisor.
  • May be required to attend Grand Rounds or Management meetings on behalf of the Canine Behavior and Training Manager.
  • Write Behavior Euthanasia requests when assigned by supervisor.
  • Transport animals when needed in a HSSC vehicle or travel to other animal welfare agencies to transport canines.
  • Be available to work at either HSSC’s Highway 12 location or the Healdsburg Center.
  • Be punctual and consistent in the performance of tasks associated with this position.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The HSSC DVM  will be responsible for providing high-quality medical and surgical care to our patients by implementing standards of animal care, and coordinating and managing treatments for animals in the care of the Humane Society of Sonoma County and through HSSC’s Community Veterinary Clinic.

Medical cases are both outpatient and inpatient with the majority being dogs and cats, and a small percentage of small mammals or other species.

Clinical responsibilities are primarily in our public-facing Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) but also includes participation in our public Spay/Neuter program and our Shelter Medicine program.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university and one year of professional veterinary medical experience.
  • Possession of a current license to practice veterinary medicine in California.
  • Experience working in shelter medicine and a passion for community medicine and access to care preferred.

SALARY RANGE:  $100,000 – $120,000 annually
