Stray Animals
Stray animals found within Healdsburg city limits can be brought to the shelter where they will be cared for until they are reclaimed by their owners or adopted into a new loving home. Click here to see stray animals or call 707-431-3386 (Healdsburg) or 707-542-0882 (Santa Rosa).
Dog Training Classes!
We offer rewards-based training, which guides dog behavior through a series of positive interactions and motivations. Have fun while helping your dog or puppy learn the basics of daily life or even agility and tricks. Understanding your pet’s needs is the first step in building a strong foundation for lifelong companionship and we are here to support you! View current class offerings.
Surrendering Your Pet
First, please consider finding your dog or cat another home instead of surrendering him/her to a shelter. It will be less stressful for your pet, allows you to play a part in uniting him/her with a new family, and makes additional space available for animals whose lives are immediately at risk. Please utilize our Rehoming Packet and our free Adoptions by Owner website listings. If you have exhausted all other options, you may call 707-542-0882 x267 to discuss space availability and an appointment for your pet’s evaluation. If you adopted your pet from us, you do have the option to surrender him/her; mention this in your discussion with our intake team.
HEALDSBURG FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Humane Society of Sonoma County – Healdsburg offers the following services:
- Cat, dog, rabbit, and small companion animal adoptions
- Acceptance of stray animals found in the City of Healdsburg
- Redemption of lost animals
- Dog licensing
The hours of operation are 11:00 am – 5:30pm Monday through Saturday. Animal control is available seven (7) days a week. The City of Healdsburg Police Department (HPD) steps in to handle stray animal needs after hours. Indoor stray hold areas are available to the HPD for drop off during closed hours.
The Humane Society of Sonoma County – Healdsburg is under contract to accept all stray pets found within Healdsburg city limits.
Stray Dogs and Cats: We will house strays from outside Healdsburg city limits on Monday, when Sonoma County Animal Services is closed, and as space allows on other days.
Stray Cats: We advise finders of stray domesticated cats to call the local shelter in their area to report the found cat. We also advise that most stray cats are typically found within one block of their home – a door-to-door “do you know this cat?” effort can help reunite the cat with its owner. We encourage finders to create a “found” flier and post it in the neighborhood.
Consider finding your dog or cat another home instead of surrendering him/her to a shelter because it will be less stressful for your animal, allows you to play a part in uniting him/her with a new family, and makes additional space available for animals whose lives are immediately at risk in surrounding municipal shelters. Please utilize our Rehoming Packet and our free Adoptions by Owner website listings.
HSSC will accept owner surrendered dogs and cats by appointment as space allows. For availability and an appointment for your pet’s evaluation please call (707) 542-0882 x267.
The Humane Society of Sonoma County – Healdsburg is under contract to provide animal care, adoption services, licensing, and field services for the City of Healdsburg. Our Healdsburg facility operates all animal care, sheltering and adoption services and has contracted with North Bay Animal Services (NBAS) to handle all licensing and animal control field services work.
For license renewals, please visit our Healdsburg facility or use our drop box out front with proof of your dog’s most recent rabies vaccine and payment. To apply for a new dog license or if you are in need of a replacement tag, please contact North Bay Animal Services at (707) 762-6227, Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00am – 6:00pm.
On average there will be space for six (6) dogs and fifteen (15) cats and two (2) rabbits at our facility. However, because we know that animal housing needs will expand and contract at different times of the year, much of the space at the center can be used with flexibility. For example, when our population of cats expands during kitten season, we will use more space for cat and kitten housing and less space for other small companion animals. The needs of animals will dictate how we use our housing space.
In addition, just as we rely on foster volunteers at our Santa Rosa campus, volunteer foster homes will greatly impact the capacity for care we have in Healdsburg.
Volunteers seeking to turn their love of animals into action and serve their community are always welcome to join our family of caring and committed volunteers. If you’re interested in exploring available volunteer opportunities at our Healdsburg shelter, please visit our website or contact Katie McHugh at (707) 542-0882, x201 for more information.
You can find information on animals available for adoption and our adoption process on our website here. You can also call (707) 431-3386 to speak with one of our caring and knowledgeable staff members or volunteers about the adoption process. Due to COVID restrictions we are now facilitating adoptions by appointment.
The Healdsburg shelter will provide supportive veterinary care for our shelter pets only. This means treating for routine medical issues that do not require surgery or emergency care. Animals with severe/complex medical conditions will be transported to our Santa Rosa shelter for care. We do not provide public veterinary support, and we encourage pet owners to develop a relationship with a local veterinarian for the lifetime care of their pet(s).
Yes. Both the Santa Rosa and Healdsburg shelters are nonprofit facilities and are thus privately funded. Donor support is critical to fulfilling our mission of ensuring that every animal receives protection, compassion, love and care. We receive no financial support from national organizations like HSUS or the ASPCA, so we rely on our local donors to help us find forever homes for all of the animals in our care. Donor support benefits the local community by improving the lives of shelter animals and making healthy pets available for companionship, and improving the quality of life for pet owners within the community. Please consider becoming a supporting member, joining us at one of our fundraising events, or using our fundraising toolkit to host your own event to benefit our Healdsburg shelter. You can view donation options here.
We also accept car donations and in-kind donations of goods and services. Learn more about our donation programs by contacting our Director of Development, Priscilla Locke, at (707) 577-1911.
