HSSC seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic full-time Wednesday – Sunday ADOPTION COUNSELOR.
This position requires weekend work, and is charged with handling all functions of the animal shelter’s front desk, including both on and off-site adoptions.
This individual will also ensure quality customer service for both our external and internal customers.
Adoption Counselors at HSSC facilitate appropriate adoptions by understanding the needs of each animal in our adoption program and matching them with the right prospective adopters.
This includes:
- preparing animals for adoption,
- interacting with customers,
- screening potential adopters,
- explaining HSSC’s philosophies, policies and procedures,
- providing general information and preparing necessary paperwork.
In addition to adoptions, a large portion of the Adoption Counselor’s time is spent handling other front desk duties, such as:
- intake of stray animals,
- animal surrenders, transfers,
- assistance with lost pets,
- processing occasional cremation requests,
- promoting and processing training class registrations and
- gratefully accepting donations.
The Adoption Department works closely with the Behavior and Training Department, Shelter Medicine, Foster Department and volunteers.

Responsibilities include animal care, housing upkeep, cleaning, feeding, occasional bathing & grooming, providing animals with environmental enrichment and recordkeeping.
Our ACT’s also perform all the necessary functions for maintaining the shelter in a thoroughly clean and sanitary manner and will assist the public as required.
SOME DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Clean and disinfect shelter areas, including cages and runs as necessary to maintain a safe sanitary environment.
• Feed and provide fresh drinking water to all shelter animals.
• Mop floors; perform laundry, dishwashing, light maintenance, and other janitorial duties as assigned.
• Unload, store and restock equipment, supplies and feed in a proper manner.
• Monitor the daily health, safety, behavior and appearance of all shelter animals.
• Report everything that requires training and medical services.
• Give medication and supplements as prescribed by the Shelter Veterinarian.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records as required.
• Provide special care as needed or directed including walking dogs and moving animals throughout the shelter.
• Assist with holding animals during medical procedures as needed.
• Maintain a pleasant, professional, courteous and tactful position with co-workers and the public at all times.
• Assist the public as requested, responding to inquiries of a general nature by telephone and in person.
• Complete classes scheduled by the Behavior & Training Department and Shelter Medicine.
• Actively support and promote the mission and goals of the Humane Society of Sonoma County.
• Ensure a positive image, enhancing the operation of the organization and improving the quality of life for animals.
• Assist public in admittance of pets or stray animals using proper interviewing techniques.
• Perform minor medical tasks such as gross physical examination, sub-Q vaccinations, microchip implantation, oral general de-wormer and blood draw at time of admittance, if needed.
• Completion of all necessary paperwork.
• Accurately and completely enter admission and any animal information utilizing the Shelter Buddy software.
• May be required to work at the Healdsburg Center as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Must demonstrate self-motivation, responsibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of domestic animal breeds, diseases, health care and basic animal behavior.
• Ability to properly lift animals, food, and supplies up to 50 pounds.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
Salary Range: $17.50 – $19.00 DOE
QUALIFICATIONS
• Six (6) months related animal care experience preferred.
• Experience in humane animal handling, restraint and confinement.
• Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays.
• May be required to work at the Healdsburg Center, as needed
• Ability to fulfill yearlong commitment as Animal Care Technician

The Animal Intake Coordinator works closely with the Foster dept., Behavior and Training and the Shelter Medicine Departments.
This position is also responsible for handling all admissions duties including animal transfers, stray intakes, surrenders and completing animal intake exams.

- Coordinates new animal intake; owner surrenders, transfers, and stray intake.
- Builds and maintains relationships with other shelters and agencies
- Monitor available space, current population and capacity for care, coordinating with relevant departments when arranging transports to ensure an appropriate population of adoptable animals.
- Counsels members of the public seeking owner surrender placement, with a focus on shelter diversion whenever possible and appropriate.
- Performs intake exams and administers vaccines and treatments for incoming animals.
- Practices and encourages humane treatment of animals.
- Transports animals in HSSC vehicle and travels to other animal welfare agencies.
- Works to ensure the shortest length of stay for in-house animals by monitoring pathways and moving the animals to the next step as they are ready.
- Performs animal care duties including housing, cleaning, feeding.
- Performs all necessary functions in maintaining the shelter in a thoroughly clean and sanitary manner.
- Assists the general public as required.
- Other duties as necessary.
Supervision: This position reports directly to the Animal Intake and Care Manager.
SOME KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED
- Customer service principles which establish a positive customer experience.
- Shelter management system (Shelter Buddy) or other data management system experience.
- MS Office Suite (Word, Excel).
- Accurate typing, data entry and computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to be personable, outgoing, patient, professional and compassionate under pressure.

- Resolve conflicts and work with minimal supervision.
- Work in a fast paced and changing environment. Excellent time management skills required.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of one-year paid experience working with animals in a kennel, shelter or veterinary hospital.

- Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
- Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays.
- Must hold a valid CA driver’s license, have dependable transportation, and be able to provide proof of insurability.

Medical cases are both outpatient and inpatient with the majority being dogs and cats, and a small percentage of small mammals or other species.
Clinical responsibilities are primarily in our public-facing Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) but also includes participation in our public Spay/Neuter program and our Shelter Medicine program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university and one year of professional veterinary medical experience.
- Possession of a current license to practice veterinary medicine in California.
- Experience working in shelter medicine and a passion for community medicine and access to care preferred.
SALARY RANGE: $100,000 – $120,000 annually
