Hello,

We are looking to rehome our 2 year old Mini-Aussie Jock.

About Jock: Jock is a very sweet and playful 25lb Red Merle Mini Aussie. Jock is neutered, house broken, and crate trained. Although a high-energy breed, Jock is pretty mellow and is content hanging out and chilling in the house when situation calls for it, although he definitely requires a good walk or run daily.
Jock loves his morning walks, playful runs at the dog park, and if you frequent the beach at all, Jock is water-dog! He absolutely loves running on the beach with other dogs and running head first into the water and waves. Jock loves chasing his tennis ball and fetch, but good luck getting him to give it back, as keep-away seems to be his game of choice. We play along because he loves it. Most days, Jock is cuddled up on the couch with our 7 year old son, sitting in the kitchen with us while we getting ready for work and school, or sitting next the back door making it abundantly clear that he is ready for a walk.

Our Current situation with Jock: Unfortunately Jock has nipped and bit several people that have come into our yard and home. We have put Jock into some less-than-ideal scenarios and he has not reacted well in most of them (our fault more than his). Jock has become pretty territorial and protective of our yard and us, and when he is around people he doesn’t know or isn’t familiar with he becomes reactive. In an attempt to help him become more comfortable, we keep him leashed until he is familiar with friends, but its not ideal for him and we can tell he has limited patience for people outside of ‘his circle’ that come into our home.

Jock has never expressed any aggression towards us or close friends and family that he is familiar with…..but people he is not familiar with, he definitely turns into a guard dog. Additionally, we have only observed this behavior at our house. We have taken him to friends houses and out in public and he has been well behaved and playful when out of his domaine.

Jock has also received a good amount of training through K9 Activity Club in Santa Rosa. We felt that he reacted very positively to the training, so much so, that we have continued taking him there for training and boarding as we can see it strengthening positive behaviors.

With all that said, we are hoping to find Jock a better situation that would potentially allow for more structured daily activity or a working environment that would be more suitable for his ‘working dog’ nature. It’s a very difficult decision for us to make, but we worry that if he stays with us, this protective/reactive side of him will progress into something we cannot manage safely.
